Psychiatric service dog (PSD) letter

A psychiatric service dog is individually trained to do specific tasks for a person with a mental health disability. A PSD letter from a licensed clinician documents that disability-related need, which is most useful when you rent.

How PSD Letter works

Book a telehealth evaluation. The clinician asks about your symptoms and the specific tasks your dog is trained to perform. If you qualify, your signed letter is emailed within 24 hours after approval.

Who it’s for, and who it isn’t

May be a fit

  • People with a mental health disability whose dog is trained to perform specific tasks, such as deep pressure during panic, interrupting self-harm behaviors or waking them from nightmares
  • Renters who need to document that need for a landlord
  • Handlers with up to 3 trained dogs

Usually not a fit

  • Dogs whose role is comfort or companionship only; that is an emotional support animal
  • Anyone who wants the letter to 'certify' a dog; training, not paperwork, makes a service dog
  • Anyone under 18

What’s included

  • Telehealth evaluation with a licensed clinician
  • Signed letter with the clinician's license type, number and state
  • Covers up to 2 dogs for $149, or up to 3 for $229
  • Letter emailed within 24 hours after approval

Possible side effects

  • No medical side effects
  • Misrepresenting a pet as a service dog is illegal in many states
  • You remain responsible for your dog's behavior and any damage

This isn’t a complete list. Your clinician reviews risks, interactions and warnings with you before prescribing. In an emergency, call 911.

What the evidence says

HUD's May 2026 enforcement guidance treats requests for animals individually trained to perform disability-related tasks, including psychiatric service dogs, as presumptively reasonable. Under the ADA, businesses may ask only two questions about a service dog and cannot require documentation.

Where a PSD letter helps

In housing, a landlord may ask for reliable information about a disability-related need when it is not obvious. A letter from a licensed clinician who evaluated you is the usual answer, and under HUD's May 2026 guidance requests for task-trained dogs are presumed reasonable. Under the 2004 HUD/DOJ Joint Statement, a provider generally should not charge an extra fee or deposit as a condition of the accommodation.

Where you do not need it

In shops, restaurants, hotels and other public places, the ADA does not allow staff to demand documentation. They may ask only whether the dog is required because of a disability and what task it has been trained to perform.

For flights, U.S. airlines use the Department of Transportation's own service animal form, which you complete and sign yourself. A clinician's letter is not required to board.

Prices

Pricing is per letter:

  • $149 for up to 2 dogs
  • $229 for up to 3 dogs

Training comes first

A letter does not make a dog a service dog. The dog must be trained to perform tasks related to your disability and behave reliably in public. If your dog helps by being with you rather than by doing trained tasks, an ESA letter is the accurate choice. If you are in crisis, call or text 988. In an emergency, call 911.

Prescription treatments are available only to eligible patients after a clinical evaluation by an independently licensed clinician.

PSD Letter: common questions

How much is a PSD letter?

$149 for up to 2 dogs, or $229 for up to 3.

How fast will I receive it?

Within 24 hours after the clinician approves it.

Do I need the letter to enter stores?

No. Under the ADA, staff cannot require documentation for a service dog.

Will an airline ask for it?

Airlines can ask you to complete the DOT service animal form, which you sign yourself. They cannot require a clinician's letter.

Is this a service dog registration?

No. There is no official service dog registry in the U.S. The letter documents your need; your dog's training is what qualifies it.
