How Montana PSD Letter works
Book a telehealth evaluation and describe your symptoms and the tasks your dog has learned. If the clinician approves, your signed letter arrives by email within 24 hours, for use with a Montana landlord. If you don't qualify, no letter is issued.
Who it’s for, and who it isn’t
May be a fit
- Montana handlers whose dog performs trained tasks for a psychiatric disability
- Renters who want a clinician's letter to support a housing request

Usually not a fit
- Comfort animals without trained tasks; Montana's separate ESA rules apply to them
- Anyone hoping a letter will stand in for training
- Anyone under 18
What’s included

This isn’t a complete list. Your clinician reviews risks, interactions and warnings with you before prescribing. In an emergency, call 911.
What the evidence says
HUD's May 2026 enforcement guidance presumes housing requests for task-trained animals are reasonable. The ADA limits businesses to two questions and no paperwork. MCA 49-4-214 brings those same two questions into Montana law and covers animals in training, while MCA 49-4-222 deals with false claims.
Montana service animal law
- MCA 49-4-214 covers working service animals and animals in training
- A person training a service animal has a handler's rights and responsibilities in public places
- A dog in training must wear gear that says so in writing, readable from 20 feet or more
- Montana's ESA documentation rules expressly exclude service animals
Montana's warning-first rule on fake claims
Under MCA 49-4-222, a person must get a written warning before a false service animal claim becomes an offense. After that, fines start at $50 and can reach $1,000 by a third offense.
Public places under the ADA
Staff can ask two things: is the dog needed because of a disability, and what task is it trained for. No letter, ID or demonstration can be demanded.
If you're refused housing in Montana
The Montana Human Rights Bureau takes housing discrimination complaints, usually within 180 days. You can also file with HUD.
Prescription treatments are available only to eligible patients after a clinical evaluation by an independently licensed clinician.
