Psychiatric service dog letter in Arkansas

Arkansas ties its service dog definition to the ADA, so a task-trained psychiatric service dog is treated the same here as anywhere. Its access statute also names housing accommodations, with no extra charge for the dog.

How Arkansas PSD Letter works

Book a telehealth evaluation and explain your symptoms and the tasks your dog performs. If the clinician approves, the signed letter is emailed within 24 hours after approval. If you don't qualify, no letter is issued.

Who it’s for, and who it isn’t

May be a fit

  • Arkansas renters with a dog trained to perform psychiatric tasks
  • Handlers asked by a landlord to document a need that isn't visible
  • People with up to 3 task-trained dogs

Usually not a fit

  • Emotional support dogs; Arkansas has separate rules and penalties for them
  • Anyone wanting the letter to stand in for training
  • Anyone under 18

What’s included

  • Telehealth evaluation with a licensed clinician
  • Signed letter listing the clinician's license type, number and state
  • $149 for 1 or 2 dogs; $229 for 3
  • Emailed within 24 hours after approval

Possible side effects

  • Falsely presenting an animal as a service animal to a business can cost up to $250 per violation in Arkansas
  • The letter doesn't make your dog a service dog; its training does
  • You're responsible for damage your dog causes

This isn’t a complete list. Your clinician reviews risks, interactions and warnings with you before prescribing. In an emergency, call 911.

What the evidence says

HUD's May 2026 guidance presumes that housing requests for task-trained dogs, psychiatric service dogs included, are reasonable. Under the ADA, businesses may ask two questions and can't require documentation. Arkansas uses the ADA's definition and lists housing accommodations in Ark. Code 20-14-304, with no extra charge for the dog.

Arkansas service dog law

  • Ark. Code 20-14-304 defines a service dog by reference to the ADA and covers public places and housing accommodations, with no extra fee.
  • Someone actively training a guide, signal or service dog may take it into public places such as hotels, schools, restaurants and transit, with no extra charge (Ark. Code 20-14-308).
  • Misrepresenting a pet to a business as a trained or in-training service animal can bring a fine of up to $250 each time (Ark. Code 20-14-310).
  • Intentionally harming or killing a service animal with no just cause is a Class D felony, and restitution is owed.

Public places under the ADA

Staff may ask only whether the dog is needed because of a disability and what task it's trained to do. They can't ask to see this letter.

PSD or emotional support dog in Arkansas

The difference matters more here than in many states. Emotional support dog letters in Arkansas need a 30-day relationship, and passing one off as a service animal is fined. If your dog's help comes from its presence rather than trained tasks, our Arkansas ESA page is the right place.
