How Wegovy® Injection works
Book a visit and meet a licensed clinician live. If Wegovy suits you, your prescription goes directly to NovoCare Pharmacy, which bills you for the medicine and delivers it to your home. Your HealifyMD program fee covers the clinical care around it.
Who it’s for, and who it isn’t
May be a fit
- Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes
- People who want the FDA-approved brand rather than a compounded version
- Adults with established heart disease and excess weight, where Wegovy is also approved to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke
- People comfortable with a small weekly injection
Usually not a fit
- Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2)
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to conceive soon
- A history of pancreatitis or severe gastrointestinal disease such as gastroparesis, unless your clinician advises otherwise
- Anyone already taking another GLP-1 or tirzepatide product
- Anyone under 18
What’s included
- Live visit with a licensed clinician to review your history, goals and labs
- A Wegovy prescription sent to NovoCare Pharmacy, only if it is medically appropriate
- Dose-step plan that follows the FDA label
- Follow-up for side effects, plateaus and dose questions
- Subscription you can cancel anytime
Possible side effects
- Common: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion and reduced appetite, mostly while doses are rising
- Less common but serious: pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney injury from dehydration and low blood sugar when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea
- Seek urgent care for severe stomach pain that does not go away, signs of an allergic reaction or trouble swallowing
- Boxed warning: semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents; whether it does in people is unknown
This isn’t a complete list. Your clinician reviews risks, interactions and warnings with you before prescribing. In an emergency, call 911.
What the evidence says
In the 68-week STEP 1 trial in adults with obesity or overweight, people on semaglutide 2.4 mg lost an average of 14.9% of body weight versus 2.4% on placebo. The higher 7.2 mg dose (Wegovy HD) was approved in 2026 after the STEP UP trial, where average weight loss reached about 21% at 72 weeks.
Two separate payments, both clear upfront
Your HealifyMD program is $75 a month, or $150 for a 3-month package, which works out to $50 a month. It covers your live visit with a licensed clinician, the prescription if you qualify and your follow-up care.
The medicine itself is paid separately to NovoCare Pharmacy, Novo Nordisk's own pharmacy. If you are prescribed Wegovy, your prescription is sent straight to NovoCare for billing and home delivery. Current NovoCare self-pay prices are:
- $199 for the 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg doses, for your first 2 fills
- $349 for doses from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg
- $399 for the 7.2 mg dose
How Wegovy dosing works
Wegovy is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week. You start low at 0.25 mg and step up every 4 weeks, through 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 1.7 mg, to the usual maintenance dose of 2.4 mg. Going up slowly gives your stomach time to adjust and is the main way to keep nausea in check.
Some adults who plateau at 2.4 mg may be offered the higher 7.2 mg dose, sold as Wegovy HD. Your clinician decides whether and when to move you up, and can hold or lower a dose if side effects are hard to manage.
What Wegovy is approved for
With a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, Wegovy is FDA-approved for long-term weight reduction in adults and children 12 and older with obesity, and in adults with overweight plus a weight-related condition. HealifyMD treats adults only.
It is also approved to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in adults with established heart disease and obesity or overweight, and to treat certain adults with the liver condition MASH.
Wegovy or compounded semaglutide
Both contain semaglutide, but they are not the same product. Wegovy is made by Novo Nordisk and reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness and quality. Compounded semaglutide is prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and is not FDA-approved.
If you prefer the brand, this program is the route. If you would rather have medication included in one price, compounded semaglutide is $299 a month through HealifyMD. Your clinician can walk you through both.
Safety points to know first
Wegovy carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents, so it is not used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Stomach side effects are common early on; drink enough fluids, because vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate you and strain your kidneys.
Tell your clinician about every medicine you take, especially insulin, sulfonylureas or anything for your thyroid, and stop and seek care for severe, lasting stomach pain.
Prescription treatments are available only to eligible patients after a clinical evaluation by an independently licensed clinician.
