College housing ESA letter

Most dorms ban pets, but colleges must consider requests to keep an emotional support animal in campus housing. This letter gives your school's disability or housing office the clinical documentation it usually asks for.

What the evidence says

University-owned housing is covered by the Fair Housing Act, and schools also have disability obligations under Section 504 and the ADA. Most schools ask students to apply through their disability services office, often well before move-in.

How campus requests usually work

Each school runs its own process. Typically you fill in a request form with disability services or residence life, attach a letter from a licensed provider and wait for a decision. Some schools also ask for an animal agreement covering vaccinations, care and roommates.

Apply early. Many schools review requests weeks before the semester, and late requests can delay move-in with your animal.

What the letter covers

The letter supports keeping your animal in your room or campus apartment. It does not give your animal access to classrooms, libraries or dining halls; emotional support animals have no public access rights under the ADA.

Price

The college housing ESA letter is $129. If you also need a letter for an off-campus rental, ask during your evaluation.

Prescription treatments are available only to eligible patients after a clinical evaluation by an independently licensed clinician.
