Which letter fits

Choose an ESA letter if your animal helps simply by being with you. Choose a PSD letter only if your dog is trained to perform specific tasks for a psychiatric disability. Students in dorms or campus housing should choose the college letter.

What these letters are for

All three are mainly for housing. Emotional support animals have no public access rights and are usually treated as pets by airlines. Psychiatric service dogs have public access under the ADA, but no documentation can be demanded there. No letter is a registration or certificate, and no official registry exists.

Common questions

Is approval guaranteed?

No. A letter is issued only if the clinician finds that you qualify. If they don't, no letter is issued.

How quickly will I get my letter?

It is emailed within 24 hours after the clinician approves it.

Can I use the letter on a plane?

Not for an ESA. For a trained service dog, airlines use the DOT form you sign yourself.
