Wyoming ESA letters

ESA letter in Wyoming

Wyoming law protects renters with assistance animals that the federal Fair Housing Act permits, and its definition explicitly includes animals that ease a disability through emotional support. There is no state housing complaint agency, so Wyoming renters go straight to HUD.

How Wyoming ESA Letter works

Book a telehealth evaluation and tell a licensed clinician how your condition affects you and how your animal helps. If you qualify, the signed letter is emailed within 24 hours after approval and you can give it to your Wyoming landlord. If you don't qualify, no letter is issued.

Who it’s for, and who it isn’t

May be a fit

  • Wyoming renters in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie or smaller towns facing a no-pets rule
  • Tenants whose animal relieves symptoms of a mental health condition
  • People who need documentation for a new lease or a renewal
  • Households with more than one support animal

Usually not a fit

  • Public places such as shops; ESAs have no public-access rights
  • Flights; airlines may treat ESAs as pets
  • Anyone looking for a certificate or registry
  • Anyone under 18

What’s included

  • Telehealth evaluation with a licensed clinician
  • Signed letter on letterhead with the clinician's license type, number and state
  • $129 covers 1 or 2 pets and $199 covers 3 or more
  • Emailed within 24 hours after approval

Possible side effects

  • No medical side effects; the risk is relying on the letter outside housing
  • In Wyoming, lying about an animal's status is a misdemeanor, and the fine can reach $750
  • Any damage to the rental is still yours to pay for

This isn’t a complete list. Your clinician reviews risks, interactions and warnings with you before prescribing. In an emergency, call 911.

What the evidence says

Wyoming ties its housing protection to federal law: the Fair Housing Act and 24 CFR 100.204 decide which assistance animals are permitted, and HUD's May 2026 guidance reviews untrained ESAs case by case. Wyo. Stat. 35-13-201 then makes discrimination against a renter with a permitted assistance animal unlawful under state law too.

Wyoming law on assistance animals in rentals

  • Wyo. Stat. 35-13-201 bars discrimination against renters who have an assistance animal permitted under the federal Fair Housing Act.
  • Section 35-13-205 defines assistance animals more widely than service animals, including animals that relieve identified symptoms of a disability through emotional support.
  • Section 35-13-203(b) makes a knowing false claim about an animal's status a misdemeanor, fined at up to $750.
  • You remain liable for any damage the animal causes.

What a Wyoming landlord can and can't ask

Because Wyoming defers to federal rules, a landlord may ask for reliable documentation when your need isn't obvious. They shouldn't ask for your diagnosis or medical records.

If your request is denied in Wyoming

Wyoming's workforce agency handles only employment discrimination, so housing complaints from Wyoming are filed with HUD. Keep your request, your letter and any written reply.

Prescription treatments are available only to eligible patients after a clinical evaluation by an independently licensed clinician.
