What lab memberships do well
Function Health and Superpower made comprehensive testing accessible without insurance paperwork. Function describes an annual visit with more than 100 tests followed by a shorter retest a few months later. Superpower describes a baseline and a retest each year covering more than 150 biomarkers. Both present results in polished dashboards that make trends easy to follow.
If you are healthy, curious and like tracking data over time, that model can be appealing. Seeing the same markers twice a year can reveal a slow drift that a single test would miss.
The catch with very large panels
More markers mean more chances for an out-of-range result. MedlinePlus notes that reference ranges are built from large groups of healthy people and that it is common for healthy people to sometimes land outside them. With well over 100 results, a few flags are almost guaranteed, and most will be harmless noise.
Sorting the meaningful from the meaningless takes clinical judgment and context. A flagged result can also lead to repeat tests, specialist visits and worry. That is one reason medical groups are cautious about routine screening without a clear purpose; the Endocrine Society, for example, advises against screening all men for low testosterone.
None of this means broad testing is bad. It means the value of a test depends on who interprets it and what happens next, which is worth weighing before you choose a service.
What happens after the report
This is where the options diverge most. Function Health says it does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, so acting on a finding usually means taking the report to your own doctor. Superpower describes access to a clinician care team and prescriptions, so check exactly what is covered for the issue you care about.
At HealifyMD, the panel is the first step of a care plan. A licensed clinician reviews your results in a visit, explains what matters, and, if you are a candidate, can prescribe treatment such as hormone therapy, testosterone, enclomiphene or a GLP-1 medication. The same clinician can order follow-up labs to check that treatment is safe and working.
Why our panel is narrower on purpose
We choose markers that answer specific questions for adults over 40: blood sugar and insulin resistance, cholesterol and ApoB, thyroid function, iron, blood counts, liver and kidney function, and the hormone tests relevant to your symptoms. Each result should change a decision or set a baseline you will need later.
Leaving out markers with little effect on care keeps the report readable and reduces false alarms. If your history calls for something more specialized, such as a DUTCH Test, a methylation panel or a CGM, your clinician can add it, priced separately.
Which should you choose?
- A membership may fit if you are well, want broad data twice a year and already have a doctor to act on findings
- HealifyMD may fit if you have a symptom or goal, such as menopause symptoms, low energy, low libido or weight gain, and want testing and treatment in one plan
- Some people do both: a membership for routine tracking and HealifyMD for a specific treatment
Questions to ask any lab service
Whichever route you take, a few questions help you see what you are really buying. The answers matter more than the number of markers on the brochure.
- Who reads my results, and will I speak with them or only get a written report?
- If something is abnormal, who follows up, and is a repeat test included?
- Can the same team prescribe treatment, or will I need to see my own doctor?
- Is my blood drawn from a vein at a lab, or collected another way?
- Is this a one-time test or a recurring membership, and how do I cancel?
- Will my results be shared with my regular doctor if I ask?
- How long until results come back, and how will I be told about an urgent finding?
Bringing outside results to HealifyMD
If you already have recent membership results, share them during your assessment. Your clinician can use what is current and relevant and order only what is missing, such as morning testosterone repeats or hematocrit before testosterone therapy. The Comprehensive Lab Panel is $199 one-time with no membership fee, and your price is confirmed at the eligibility review.

Common questions
What is the difference between Function Health and Superpower?
Both are annual lab memberships with two draws a year. Superpower places more emphasis on its clinician care team, while Function focuses on testing and clinician-reviewed reports.
Is HealifyMD a Function Health alternative?
Partly. We test fewer markers but pair testing with a clinician who can treat, so we are better suited to people with a specific concern.
Can HealifyMD use my Function Health or Superpower results?
Yes. Recent results can reduce what needs to be drawn again, as long as they include what your clinician needs.
Why does HealifyMD test fewer markers?
Each marker on our panel is chosen because it changes a decision. Fewer low-value tests also means fewer false alarms.
Does a bigger panel catch more disease?
Not necessarily. It produces more out-of-range flags, and many of those turn out to be normal variation.
Is the HealifyMD panel a subscription?
No. It is $199 one-time with no membership fee. Repeat labs are only ordered when your clinician needs them.
Should I do both?
It can make sense if you value regular broad tracking and also want treatment for a specific issue. Just share results so tests are not duplicated.
